Artist's Comments

Photo of grain elevator in Seven Mile, Ohio. Train tracks go right through the middle here, and the NS main is just on the other side. They drop off one lonely hopper here occasionally.

That's a sight I'm used to around here. There's grain elevators every 5 to 10 miles in this area of the country.

I bet. There is a lot around here, but most are small and don't get rail service. (or did at one time.)

Actually, it's quite the same around here anymore. Every major elevator around here does get rail service, but you rarely see anything around them that suggests such. I've seen hoppers around them, but you never see any switching done with them. And some of the trackage makes you wonder whether it'd be feasible to even run a locomotive over it without moving it around.

Although I did see a BNSF consort running around the south side of my hometown the other night when I was out fruitlessly trying to shoot AmTrak. It was something I'd not seen in quite awhile...

A few places in the state I see large grain elevators with their own switcher, usually a GE 44 Tonner or a well worn ALCO. (I know... I should take pictures.)

Please do. This is something I'd be dying to see. Out here, it seems like nobody knows what the concept of shortline railroading is anymore.
